Basic Building Block Chili

Traditional chili, waiting for your touches to make it all your own.

Ingredients

1-1/2 lbs ground sirloin
2 cups chopped white or yellow onion
1 can (15 oz) light red kidney beans, drained
1 can (15 oz) dark red kidney beans, drained
1 can (15 oz) cannellini beans, drained
2 cans (15 oz) pinto beans, drained
2 cans (14.5 oz ea) diced tomatoes with jalapeños
2 packets chili seasoning mix
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 cup water
Pinch of sea salt
Couple of shakes of pepper

Customizing Ingredients/Toppings
Bacon bits
Chili powder
Chopped red onion
Cilantro
Corn chips or tortilla chips
Cornbread crumbles
Jalapeño slices
Oyster crackers or saltines
Shredded cheese
Sour cream

 

Directions

Brown ground beef and onions in a skillet until internal temperature of beef reaches 160° F on a meat thermometer, working the meat into fine pieces. Remember, smooth beef leads to smooth chili.

Put the browned mixture into a slow cooker.

Add remaining ingredients and stir together.

Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 7 to 8 hours.

Ladle into bowls and serve with the above customizing toppings or your favorites.
