Orchard Fresh Chili

1-1/2 lbs ground chuck
1 cup chopped white onion
1 large green apple, peeled, cored and diced
1 large red apple, peeled, cored and diced
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 tsp minced garlic
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
2 cups water
1 can (15 oz) chili beans, drained
1/3 cup almond slivers
2 T unsweetened cocoa powder
1 T ground cinnamon
2 T chili powder
1 T salt
1 T pepper
Heat a large pot over high heat.
Brown ground beef to an internal temperature of 160° F on a meat thermometer.
Remove meat from pan; drain fat.
Return pan to heat and add onion, apples and green pepper.
Stir until onion is translucent.
Return meat to pan.
Stir in garlic, tomatoes, water and beans.
Simmer for approximately 15 minutes over medium heat.
Add remaining ingredients.
Simmer over low heat (or move to slow cooker on low setting), stirring occasionally, for at least 90 minutes.
Serve with chocolate shavings, to taste.
